- Most decks and pergolas — the best balance of price and durability.
- Look
- Deep red-brown that mellows to a warm brown as it weathers.
- Upkeep
- Re-oil every 12–18 months to hold the colour.
Spotted gum / blackbutt
- Best for
- Higher-end decks and feature areas where the grain is on show.
- Look
- Pale to mid honey tones with strong, varied grain.
- Upkeep
- Re-oil yearly; hoses off easily and wears very hard.
Treated pine
- Best for
- Subframes, pergola framing and budget-conscious builds.
- Look
- Light and even — takes paint or stain well.
- Upkeep
- Paint or stain every few years; minimal otherwise.
Keeping it looking new
- Sweep leaves and debris out of board gaps so water can drain freely
- Wash down with water and a soft broom twice a year — no high-pressure blasting
- Re-oil hardwood before it greys out rather than after
- Keep pot plants on feet so moisture doesn't sit on the boards
- Check fixings and handrails once a year, especially on raised decks
- We can come back and handle the sand-and-re-oil for you when it's due
